Craigslist: Missing Connections is a digital performance piece enacted on Chicago’s Craigslist Missed Connections site, a site where individuals post chance encounters they have with others, with whom they imagine there exists a connection. I posted personal ads, in the spirit of a missed connection, about myself. The responses I got were all from Bots- algorithms designed to answer ads with formulaic responses in the hope of attracting addresses to spam. What resulted was hundreds of ads about me and even more responses from bots: missed connections indeed. I developed relationships with these bots, there were several bots that were frequent fliers and a few would respond with sexually explicit suggestions. Eventually this content will take shape as a java-based “data visualization” and will illustrate the relationships between the posts as well as between the different families of bots.
